Natasha Sunshine, Founder of Byu-ti Salon in Los Angeles, California is passionate about hair! With 20 years of experience under her belt, HSD.com had the privilege to interview this well respected, highly seeked, and much desired hairstylist. Having twiddled with several celebrity hairs, Ms Sunshine’s advice is free yet priceless; Don’t just read it, take it!Q: What do you think are best trends in the hair industry right now?
Elegance is IN right now. I believe that we’ve gone back to basics with the current state of the economy. I’m loving the turn towards feminine, understated chic style. You’ll see low chignons, clean, short haircuts and soft billowy long layers.
Q: Worst?
Flash is out. Classic is now.
Q: As a hairstylist you must have lots of people sitting in your chair who’ve made some horrible hair choices: What’s the biggest hair mistake anyone can make?
Over-processing. I think we get in trouble when we want too many different looks in too short of a time period. This is usually a product of not really knowing what you want. I recommend to my clients that they really make a game out of a new look. Begin by researching what you love. Create a file. Rip out all the images you can find that you love. Then we can sit and decide on a look that works with what you love.
Q: What hair color do you recommend for the upcoming season?
Cool tones in hair color.
*Rich browns with a hint of velvety-violet undertones.
*Icy blondes with a touch of wheat for contrast.
Q: What hair care products / brands are you in love with at the moment?
I am a die-hard PureOlogy girl. They are a vegan line, have integrity and work incredibly well to repair all kinds of damaged hair.
Q: Describe your “Classic Approach to Beauty.” how do you define beauty?
For years, I taught a course called: Discovering Your Authentic Beauty. The premise of the program was to really tap into who you are and build your beauty from there. I’m a fashion junkie but it’s important to represent your personal style in a way that is true to your spirit.
True beauty radiates from an inner source, causes a glow about its subject and blows past all boundaries of fashion and trend. Beauty is a vibrancy, an attitude and a way of being.
Q: What do you find to be the most common mistakes women make with hair color?
The most common mistake with hair color is not thinking it through. You want to be clear about the up-keep, if it’s the right tonal palette for you and if you have the budget to maintain it.
Q: Which hairstyles are the most popular/ do you tend to do the most often?
Being a Los Angeles based hairstylist, we have a lot of long Giselle-type haircuts. And being five blocks from the beach, we have loads of blonde guests.
Q: How can someone tame crazy frizzy hair and still keep their curls?
Use a straightening styling product for the hair, diffuse the curl and follow up with a few bends around a curling iron to give polish to your curls.
Q: Does the average consumer really need to splurge on high-priced hair care products, or are drugstore items just as good?
It’s sort of like fast food vs. health food. Cheap hair products use fillers and low-grade ingredients where higher end lines tend to use nourishing ingredients that can add health and vitality back to the hair.
