Hairstyles for the 20s, 30s 40s and beyond

Just because you’re not wearing two side pony tails anymore doesn’t mean you have an age appropriate hairstyle.  Let’s narrow it down this way:  What suits you in your 20s might have the same appeal in your 30s, 40s or many years down the road.   Are you searching to find your career; in and out of relationships?  The 20s is perhaps one of the most challenging, curious, exploratory times of both a man and woman’s life.  Hair often reflects that.   Hair and fashion are more a means of self expression during this period and celebrities serve as great inspirations for people in their 20s who want to have fun with their look. 20 something year olds can get away with hair experimentation; cuts, colors, and styles that are out of the ordinary and something to be talked about.  Just because hairstyles are generally more creative at this stage doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be suitable for certain occasions or professions.  In an artsy fartsy world, more freedom to play around with ones locks is likely while young professionals may remain a bit more rigid with color and style.   Depending on your hair texture, face shape and a few other factors that play a role in hairstyle decisions, celebrities like Rihanna, Pink, Fantasia and Gwen Stefani are hairstyle icons for 20 something year old hair darers.  Now is the time to experiment with color and length.  Free yourself of your hair and cut it off like you never thought possible.  Die it red just because.  At your age, your hair will grow faster and thicker than at any other point in your life, so enjoy it while you have it by having fun with it now.

So you’ve finally hit the dirty thirties and know exactly what you want.  You may be a family woman with a fulltime career, back on the dating market after years of being exclusive, or finally found this inner self also known as the real ‘you’.  If it feels as fantastic as it sounds, you’re probably much more settled in your decisions than you were a decade ago.  Because of this, your hairstyle choices might reflect who you are right now.  While you can still get away with all sorts of hairstyles at this stage, you’ll want to choose one that fits your lifestyle.  Long cascading healthy hair with layers may scream single and loving it while the Victoria Beckham short pob or a new upgraded bob hairstyle may be testaments to your new found security within your self.  If you’re a mom once or twice over, you might not have the time to fuss with a new do that requires straightening, curling or extra primping.  Opt for something sexy that represents you yet still allows you to spend your time doing more important things than fiddling with your hair.  If  you’ve found some gray hair popping up, don’t be alarmed!  At this stage of mid to late 30s, it’s normal.  You can ask your stylist to hand paint the strands instead of coloring your full head of hair.  Finally, don’t be afraid to go short.  You might be waiting a few more decades before you crop above the ears, but with so many amazing new hairstyles for short hair, there isn’t a better time to do it.  It takes a pretty bold character to cut hair short. Show more neck, and more face and you’ll show more confidence.

Hello 40s, goodbye long hair?  Nope, doesn’t have to be that way!  If it did, celebrities like Selma Hayek and Halle Berry wouldn’t grow their hair past their chin.  In these years, personality might be your hairstyles driving factor.  If you scream sexuality, opt for long sexy waves.  Are you fit as a fiddle and always on the go?  How about a sleek medium length look that can be put up or let down.  At this stage of your hairs life, layers are very flattering but flat hair isn’t.  Be sure your stylist cuts your layers with optimum body.  As we get older, our hair loses the luster it had in previous eras, but that doesn’t mean we have to throw in the towel and dread getting older.  Quite the contrary, embrace your 40s.  You’ve experienced more than 4 decades of life, experience and events that formed your character and who you are.  If you want to look like you jumped back into your 30s, do some color adjustment.  Caramel highlights or a shade or two lighter than your regular hair color will not only camouflage possible grays, but will brighten you up literally and figuratively.

Is 50 the new 40?  Your hair can certainly pretend it is.  Going natural doesn’t mean exposing your grays, not using products or letting your hair fall where it may.  At every age, we have to maintain healthy hair and in our 50s, extra attention should be paid to the style itself.  Just because you’re 50 doesn’t mean you have to look it.  Coloring your hair a couple of shades lighter will make a huge difference in your over all look and take years off your face.  Asking a stylist what color works best with your skin tone is ideal. If you’re against the idea of coloring your hair, adjust your hairstyle accordingly so the grey wont steal the show.   Layers are also a very youth-ifying look.  Piecey layers around the face can be very flattering with curly or straight textured locks.  You don’t to be resort to chin length hair just because your mother did it and her mother did it and her mother did it and you get the point.  Why not change tradition by going medium?  Stay away from dated looks such as spiked dos or extra short hair pulled behind the ears.  With medium length hair and long layers, numerous hairstyles can be created for a variety of occasions.

If you really want to bring out your physical best in any era, work with your hair texture, face shape, lifestyle and personality to achieve the best cut, color and style.  What’s in at the moment might not be suitable for your age group but that doesn’t mean you can’t tweak it a little to be more age appropriate and it certainly doesn’t’ mean you can’t have fun finding a hairstyle in the process.  Happy hunting!
