Thank goodness there aren’t any official fashion police handing out tickets for fashion faux pas’s. The debt to pay would be huge for simultaneously wearing plaid with stripes, large prints, brown with black and sandals with socks. Alright, so the socks with sandals faux pas is definitely not a fashion myth. But there are exceptions to almost any rule, and it’s no surprise celebrity fashion divas have begun bending stylistic rules and setting trends that dispel any myths about what not to wear.
Myth #1: You can’t wear white after Labor day
And what will it be next? Don’t wear red after valentines and green after St. Patties? Perhaps we’ve all been slaves to this belief at some point or another but when can this rule be broken? Always! Thanks to the newer generation many faux pas’s in the fashion world are becoming the latest fashion movements. In this day and era, people of every age are dressing in white pants, blouses, boots and dresses after the first weekend in September all throughout the colder months.
If people took this rule too seriously, white parkas and snow pants, scarves and hats would never be seen in December. The truth is white is fabulously sported at any time of year but it’s more a question of what type of white clothing is worn more than the color itself. For example, you wouldn’t wear a pair of white open toe sandals in the middle of February, but a sexy pair of white pumps with a little white winter jacket to match would definitely look hot!
Myth # 2: Avoid mixing clashing colors
Which colors? Some articles of clothing have several of these ‘clashable’ colors in the same garment. Is there really a difference to wear them in separate items of clothing? The old adage stressed that lipstick and nail polish had to be the same shade but fortunately one can completely ignore that ‘rule’ altogether and even apply the same principal to clothing. Red and yellow for instance, are two lively yet extremely diverse colors. Worn as a sweater, shoulder bag or some other form of accessory, the combination pops with juicy vibrancy. Colors can compliment rather than distract from each other and if worn correctly, you can flaunt your sexy style in a gorgeous colorful dress that makes a major statement.
Myth #3: Never Wear Large Prints
Big printed attire can make a major statement and depending on your height and weight, large prints can either make you look fantastic or downright horrendous. The bigger the print the more ‘eye-catching’ a garment will be so by following a couple of simple rules you’ll be sure to draw the right kind of attention. If you're tiny and wear something large, you'll appear smaller and the opposite is true if you're large and wear something small, you'll appear um...more grandiose shall we say.
So a general wardrobe rule for a small person would be to wear smaller prints and larger prints if you're ‘not so small’. Once you’ve found a print size that suits your size, you’ll be able to pull it off with pride.
At the end of the day, there are exceptions to nearly everything so forget most of the fashion rules you were told years ago and start fresh by being less rigid about your closet and more exploratory about the clothes you put on. Does it make you look good? Does it make you feel good? If so, you’ll hold your head up high and rock any style with confidence. Who knows, you might even make socks with sandals the latest trend!
